Maruti Wagon R might soon get a major upgrade since a fully camouflaged test mule for the popular hatchback was recently spotted testing on Indian roads. Without making any statement on the launching of the next-gen version of the car, there are certain things that can be inferred from the test mule.
The existing model of Wagon R belongs to the third generation and was launched way back in 2019 and updated in 2022. Despite being old, it still continues to be one of the key models of Maruti Suzuki.
Next-Generation Wagon R: What Do The Spy Shots Reveal?
The heavy green paint hides details so it is hard to spot all the changes. The car still looks like the tall‑boy shape that fans know. The tail lights are still up high. The side view is not much different from the current Wagon R. Most of the changes seem to be in the front—especially the grille and the bumper. The test car looks a bit bigger. We cannot confirm the exact size, from the spy shots alone. So Maruti may be tweaking the Wagon R’s design of making a brand‑new car.
The Cabin Could Get A Technology Upgrade
The spy footage that was taken in Delhi, also shows a view inside the new small car. One thing that stands out seems to be a central screen compared with the 7-inch entertainment system that is available on the current model.
The screen size and other inside parts are still not confirmed. The test car was also seen with seats that have built-in headrests.
A more up- to-date entertainment system would make sense because the low-price car market has changed a lot since the current version of the Small House came out.
The Real Surprise Might Lie Beneath The Hood
The bigger surprise may lie beneath the hood. The present day Wagon R comes with 1.0 litre and 1.2 litre gasoline engines with a CNG variant as well. There is a choice between manual and AMT gearbox.
The upcoming model is expected to feature the Z-series engine developed by Maruti replacing the older 1.2 K series engine. The new engine design may aid in achieving higher efficiency and low emission but no specifications of the powertrain of the Wagon R have been made by Maruti yet.
Interestingly, Maruti has launched the Bioflex version of Wagon R with 1.2 litre engine running on ethanol blend up to E100.
Why The Wagon R Remains Relevant
The Wagon R is still amongst the most favorite hatchback cars of India. As per the data provided in the report, Maruti has already made sales of about 1.24 lakh units until July 2026 of which about 23,000 units were sold in the month of July alone.
What makes it relevant is the big tall-boy cabin, easy entry-exit, efficient engines, and inexpensive ownership cost.
Our Take
I think the first spy sighting suggests that Maruti may not plan to change the formula that has made the Wagon R successful.
Instead I think the next generation could focus on improving the areas that matter most: efficiency, technology and everyday usability. A newer Z‑series engine and upgraded system would make sense. Retaining the tall‑boy proportions could keep the practicality that Wagon R buyers value.
For now the next‑generation designation, specifications and launch timeline remain unconfirmed. Until Maruti reveals more I think the camouflaged prototype should be seen as an indication of what the company is developing, not the final production car.
